The Number that Changed My Life

There’s just one lucky number you can be sure of. See how our CALD ad campaign breaks down shame and stigma around gambling in multicultural communities.

Campaign overview

Numbers can mean good luck or bad luck for many culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) communities. The ritual of choosing numbers has a strong relationship to gambling, particularly for people experiencing gambling harm. Chasing numbers can even be a trigger to gamble more.

Launched in 2021, this campaign focuses on the role that numbers play. It lets people know that their real lucky number in gambling is 1800 858 858 – the GambleAware counselling service – and that their biggest win may come from calling.

Key message

It’s okay to seek help for problems with gambling, and there’s culturally appropriate support available, with the memorable takeaway:

1800 858 858 is the number that changed my life.

Campaign description

All communities have their own character, setting, gambling-related issues and support networks, so the campaign shifts to be appropriate for each one. It will also be presented in the community’s preferred language. This year we’re focusing on Vietnamese, Arabic, Chinese (Mandarin and Cantonese), Hindi and Korean.

However, the journey is the same for everyone:

  • My life was affected by gambling.
  • I found the number that changed my life.
  • Now I have support and harmony back in my life.

By presenting a combination of hope and motivation, we help people see that getting support can bring harmony back into their lives, including a happy life with their loved ones.

We aim to break down shame and stigma, educate about the signs of problematic gambling and raise awareness of culturally appropriate support services.
